The long house could hold 30 to 60 people. It could be 25 to 150 feet long. The longhouse was built by driving two rows of poles into the ground in zigzag lines 10 or 12 feet apart. The poles were tied together at the top.<br />Each family had a space about 6 by 9 feet for a personal area.<br />The interiorof the shelter was very important to the Iroquois people protected the from getting there fires blown out. There were no windows, which made it very dark inside except for the fires down the center path. A door was built at the end of the long house. The bed was covered with corn husk mats and then skins and furs. The fires were shared by two families. The fires provided light, warmth and a heat source for cooking food. Bunk beds were placed along the side walls. They doubled as benches during the day. Iroquois celebration of the Green Corn Festival lasted 4 days. During the festival kids born in the winter were given their names. Their names would be given during a thanks giving speech. They feasted on succotash and corn soup. This is made of corn, beans and squash. The last day everyone played a game called the peach stone game.It’s a game of chance.The winner got peach stones.<br />ALGONQUIANS: Spirit Dreams<br /> a<span style="color:red;background-color:#fcc;"> boy’s</span><span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;"> boy's</span> 12th birthday he was to go into the woods and wait for a spirit<span style="color:red;background-color:#fcc;"> dream. Corn, beans, and squash were called,” The Three Sisters” because they were often planted together in the same spot. They were the three main crops. They also picked berries and herbs.<br />The men did most of the hunting. They hunted deer, fish, and elk with weapons like bows, spears, and arrows.<br />The food they ate wasn’t very different from what we eat now. Back then they ate fish and deer, and also found stuff in the woods or forests just like we do. The women would cook the food over the fire back at the village.
